释义 | telephonen. 1. Any of various types of acoustic apparatus, device, or instrument for conveying sound over a distance. For the modern telephone which converts sound into electrical signals and vice versa, see sense 3a. a. Any apparatus which conveys sound, esp. that of the voice, as vibrations along a string, wire, or other solid medium; spec. one consisting of two objects (e.g. tin cans) which can act as diaphragms, connected by a taut string or wire. Usually with distinguishing word or phrase, as lovers' telephone, string telephone, tin can telephone, etc. With the exception of quot. 1832, usage in this sense is with direct allusion to sense 3a, and so a modifying word is usually used to clarify the sense intended. An apparatus designed to convert sound, esp. speech, into electrical signals for the purpose of allowing two people to communicate verbally over a distance. In later use spec.: such a device used for communicating over a telecommunications network, typically equipped with a numbered dial or keypad used for initiating a connection with a particular user, and a means of alerting the recipient of an incoming call (typically by making a distinctive noise); (also more narrowly) the receiver or handset of such a device. Cf. phone n.2 1.One of the earliest devices of this kind was that constructed in 1861 by Johann Philipp Reis (1834–74), but this was found to suffer from a number of shortcomings that limited its practical use. Of those who investigated the possibility of transmitting speech in this way, such as Antonio Meucci (1808–89) and Elisha Gray (1835–1901), it was Alexander Graham Bell (1847–1922) who, in 1876, patented the first telephone that was capable both of transmitting speech clearly and reliably, and of allowing both parties to communicate with one another.Frequently with modifying word specifying a particular operational feature. mobile telephone, radio telephone, satellite telephone, etc.: see the first element. In recent use the word telephone (unlike phone) is typically used to refer to a landline telephone rather than a mobile phone.
