Etymology: < Middle French acharner to give (a hunting dog, etc.) a taste of flesh (mid 14th cent., implied in an adjectival use of the past participle; also in reflexive use s'acharner to thirst for blood, become cruel (1394); earlier in Old French in the phrase acharné sor (to be) attacking fiercely (c1170)) < a- a- prefix⁵ + charn , variant of char flesh (see chare n.⁴).

Obsolete. rare.
