Etymology: Middle English in fever terciane , or terciane , < Latin febris tertiāna , also tertiāna noun, < tertius third: see -an suffix. Compare Old French tierçain(e adjective (13th cent. in Godefroy), tierçaine noun, a fever (12th cent.).

1. Pathology. Of a fever or ague: Characterized by the occurrence of a paroxysm every third (i.e. every alternate) day.In early use following the noun as in French; cf. quotidian adj. and n.
