Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French achatour.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman achatour (late 12th cent. as achatur ; Old French, Middle French, French acheteur ) < achater to purchase (see achate v.) + -our -our suffix. Compare post-classical Latin achator caterer (1362 in a British source). Compare acater n., cater n.1 Compare also achate n.2
historical in later use.
An officer who purchases provisions for the household of the king or a lord, a purveyor (now historical). Also: gen. a purchaser of provisions.
