Etymology: < Italian terzetto, diminutive < terzo ( < Latin tertius ) third + -etto , -et suffix¹. Thence also obsolete French tiercet (c1500 in Jean Le Maire) and modern French tercet (17th cent. in Boileau), whence the later English forms.

1. Prosody. A set or group of three lines rhyming together, or bound by double or triple rhyme with the adjacent triplet or triplets; spec. (a) each of the triplets of the Italian terza rima n.; (b) each of the two triplets usually forming the last six lines of a sonnet.
