Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin tellina.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin tellina (1516 or earlier; adopted in scientific Latin as a genus name by Linnaeus in his Systema Naturae (ed. 10, 1758) 674) < ancient Greek τελλίνη, kind of shellfish, of unknown origin. Compare Middle French, French telline (1558), Old Occitan tellina (1439), Spanish telina (1525), Italian tellina (1550; 1525 as †telina).In plural form tellinae after the Latin plural form.
Zoology.
A bivalve mollusc of the genus Tellina (see tellin n.). Also (in form Tellina): the genus itself.
