Etymology: < boxing n.1 (compare sense 2a at that entry) + day n., with reference to the tradition of tradespeople and employees receiving presents from their customers or employers on that day (compare Christmas box n. 3a).
The day after Christmas Day; the 26th of December.Boxing Day is a public holiday in the United Kingdom and a number of other countries. Traditionally on this day tradespeople, employees, etc., would receive presents or gratuities (see Christmas box n. 3a) from their customers or employers.
