Etymology: < (i) Middle French terribleté, Middle French, French (now rare) terribilité frightful character (15th cent.; late 14th cent. in sense ‘terrible thing’), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin terribilitas frightful character (6th cent.) < classical Latin terribilis terrible adj. + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix). Compare Old Occitan terribilitat rigorousness, terribleness (c1297), Spanish terribilidad (late 14th cent. as †terribilidat ), Italian terribilità , †terribiltà terribilità n.
