Etymology: < French terricole (of an animal) living on the ground or in the earth (1802 or earlier; 1777 as noun in sense ‘inhabitant of the earth’) and its etymon scientific Latin terricola (1784 as a specific name in entomology; 1825 in plural Terricolae as a former division name: P. A. Latreille Familles naturelles du règne animal (1825) 484), specific use of classical Latin terricola inhabitant of the earth (2nd cent. a.d. in Apuleius) < terra terra n. + -cola -cole comb. form. Compare slightly earlier terricolous adj.
