Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin terriculāmentum.
Etymology: < classical Latin terriculāmentum object of terror, bugbear (2nd cent. a.d. in Apuleius) < terriculum (also terricula ) something that excites terror ( < terrēre to frighten (see terrible adj.) + -culum -culum suffix (or -cula -cula suffix)) + -mentum -ment suffix.In form terriculamenta after the Latin plural form. The form terriculamentaes shows double plural marking, the English plural morpheme -es having been added to the Latin neuter plural morpheme -a.
Now rare.
A source or object of fear, esp. of unnecessary fear; a bugbear.
