Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin acheronticus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin acheronticus of or belonging to Acheron or the underworld (4th cent.) < classical Latin Acheront- , Acherōn Acheron n. + -icus -ic suffix. Compare Middle French acheronique (1501).
Chiefly literary.
Of or relating to Acheron (see Acheron n.); infernal, hellish; dark, gloomy. Also as n.In quot. 1621: that is on the brink of death, moribund.
