单词 teton
释义

Tetonn.adj.

Brit. /ˈtiːtɒn/, U.S. /ˈtiˌtɑn/
Inflections: Plural unchanged, Tetons.
Forms:

α. 1600s Tintonha, 1700s Tetowah, 1800s Teetonwan, 1800s Tintinho, 1800s–1900s Tintonwan, 1800s– Titonwan.

β. 1700s–1800s Teeton, 1700s–1800s Tinton, 1800s Teetwan, 1800s Teetwawn, 1800s Tetan, 1800s Tetones (plural), 1800s Tetongue, 1800s Tieton, 1800s Titon, 1800s Titones (plural), 1800s Titong, 1800s– Teton.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Sioux. Etymons: French Tinthonha, Sioux Thíthuŋwaŋ.
Etymology: < (i) French †Tinthonha (1683, on a map; now Teton), and its etymon (ii) Sioux (Santee) Thíthuŋwaŋ, of uncertain origin. The β. forms are the result of shortening within English. It used to be thought that the first part of the Sioux name is thíta prairie (compare quot. 1698), but this poses phonological problems and is no longer widely accepted.
