the galleys
a. A low flat-built seagoing vessel with one deck, propelled by sails and oars, formerly in common use in the Mediterranean. Cf. galliass n. The rowers were mostly slaves or condemned criminals. Hence phr. to condemn, or send, to the galleys, and simply the galleys, to indicate the punishment of a galley slave. half, quarter galley (see quot. 1794).
