Etymology: < the names of Max Born (see Born n.) and Fritz Haber (see Haber n.).In Born–Haber cycle after German Born-Haberscher Kreisprozess (1930 or earlier; now usually Born-Haber-Kreisprozess).
Chemistry.
As a modifier. Designating a cycle of reactions which describe the formation of an ionic compound from its elements by means of a series of steps, such that the energy change for one step of the cycle can be calculated from the energy changes associated with the other steps (chiefly in Born–Haber cycle). Also: of, relating to, or calculated with reference to such a cycle.Born–Haber cycles are used esp. for calculating lattice energy.
