a. figurative. Something regarded as sinful, corrupt, or idolatrous; esp. (frequently in biblical use) a corrupt, decadent, or idolatrous community or city; (in early use often) spec. (derogatory) the Pope, the Roman Catholic Church, or Rome as the seat of the Pope and the centre of authority of the Roman Catholic Church.
