Etymology: < medieval Latin bovāta, < bōs , bovis an ox; compare -ate suffix1.
An oxgang, or as much land as one ox could plough in a year; one-eighth of the carucate or ploughland; varying in amount from 10 to 18 acres according to the system of tillage, etc.
