-ifysuffix
Primary stress is either attracted to the syllable immediately preceding this suffix or retained by the usual stressed syllable of the preceding element. Vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: -i- connective, -fy suffix.
Etymology: < -i- connective + -fy suffix. In loanwords (directly or indirectly) from classical Latin with this ending the -i- belongs to the stem of the preceding element: see further discussion at -i- connective and -fy suffix. Formations on English words (in some cases ultimately of Latin origin) are found from at least the 16th cent., e.g. gracify v., firmify v., foolify v., neatify v.
