Etymology: < thick adj. + knee n., after post-classical Latin and scientific Latin oedicnemus (1555 or earlier; < ancient Greek οἰδεῖν to swell (see oedema n.) + κνήμη tibia: see cnemial adj.); so called from the bird's prominent tibio-tarsal joints.
A name for any bird of the genus Œdicnemus, esp. the Stone Curlew, Norfolk or Great Plover, Œ. scolopax ( Œ. crepitans, Temminck).
