Etymology: Apparently < thorough- prefix + fare v.1 + -ing suffix1, perhaps after wayfaring n. In later use probably also directly < thorough- prefix + faring n. Compare earlier thoroughfare v.1 In β. forms altered after through- prefix.
Now rare.
