单词 | boys brigade |
释义 | Boys' Brigaden. Any of various organizations of boys, formed for the purpose of mutual support, spiritual instruction, or service to the community; (now chiefly) spec. a Christian organization of this type, first established in Glasgow in 1883. Also: a particular group or company of members of this organization. The origins of the modern organization may be traced to a volunteer band or brigade for the boys of North Woodside Mission Sabbath School, Glasgow, established by the businessman and Sunday school teacher William A. Smith (1854–1914), who devised a programme of physical activity and quasi-military drill as a means of inculcating discipline. Other companies were soon formed elsewhere in Glasgow on the same model, and the organization subsequently spread elsewhere in Scotland, England, and the rest of the English-speaking world; it retains strong connections with Presbyterian and Nonconformist churches. The organization or institution referred to in quot. 1872 is apparently unrelated.
