1953 J. S. Fruton & S. Simmonds Gen. Biochem. xxxviii. 900 Recent work has assigned to α-lipoic acid..the structure of 6,8-dithio-n-octanoic acid (‘6-thioctic acid’). Isomers of this compound such as the 4,8-dithio acid (‘4-thioctic acid’) or the 5,8-dithio acid (‘5-thioctic acid’) have less POF [sc. pyruvate oxidation factor] activity.
1975 Sci. Amer. Mar. 98/2 In the 1950's thioctic acid had been proposed as a remedy for liver damage caused by heavy-metal poisoning.
