Etymology: < ancient Greek ἄχολος lacking gall or a gall bladder, in Hellenistic Greek also deficient in bile ( < ἀ- a- prefix⁶ + χολή bile: see cholic adj.) + -ous suffix. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (æ·kŏləs) /ˈækələs/.

Obsolete. rare.
