Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ἄχολος , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἄχολος lacking gall or a gall bladder, in Hellenistic Greek also deficient in bile ( < ἀ- a- prefix6 + χολή bile: see cholic adj.) + -ous suffix. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (æ·kŏləs) /ˈækələs/.
Obsolete. rare.
Of an animal: lacking a gall bladder.Quot. 1856 is from a paper read by Whewell to the society on 11 February 1850.
