Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Old Frisian þrotbolla < the Germanic base of throat n. + the Germanic base of bowl n.1 (compare also boll n.1). Compare Old Frisian strotbolla in the same sense (see discussion at throat n.).It is unclear whether the form throt-bell shows a transmission error or remodelling of the second element, perhaps after bell n.1 or bell n.3 Compare also throat-goll n.
Obsolete.
