Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: thrombo- comb. form, -cyte comb. form.
Etymology: < thrombo- comb. form + -cyte comb. form, after German Thrombocyt (M. C. Dekhuyzen 1892, in Verhandl. der Anat. Gesellsch. 94).
Zoology and Medicine.
Originally: a type of nucleated, spindle-shaped cell found in non-mammalian vertebrates which serves the same function in blood clotting as the blood platelet in mammals. In later use also: a blood platelet.
