Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; partly modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Greek θρόμβος , -lite comb. form¹.

Etymology: < ancient Greek θρόμβος lump, clot of blood, curd of milk (see thrombus n. and compare thrombo- comb. form) + -lite comb. form¹, in sense 1 after German Thrombolith (Breithaupt, 1838). In both senses, named in allusion to the irregular, lumpy appearance of the structures in question.

1. Mineralogy. A copper mineral found in amorphous green masses, now known to be a mixture consisting mainly of pseudomalachite. Now rare or disused.
