Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; partly modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Greek θρόμβος , -lite comb. form1.
Etymology: < ancient Greek θρόμβος lump, clot of blood, curd of milk (see thrombus n. and compare thrombo- comb. form) + -lite comb. form1, in sense 1 after German Thrombolith (Breithaupt, 1838). In both senses, named in allusion to the irregular, lumpy appearance of the structures in question.
1. Mineralogy. A copper mineral found in amorphous green masses, now known to be a mixture consisting mainly of pseudomalachite. Now rare or disused.

2. Geology. Chiefly in plural. An organosedimentary structure composed of aggregated lumps of calcareous material produced by the trapping, binding, or precipitation of sediment by cyanobacteria and other microorganisms. Cf. stromatolite n.
