A proprietary name for: a rich, dark, savoury paste originally made from concentrated essence of beef, which can be used as a spread, added to savoury dishes for flavour, or dissolved in hot water to make a drink resembling beef tea; (also) a hot drink made with this. Also figurative.Bovril was originally manufactured by the Canadian Meat and Produce Company, under the name of Johnston's Fluid Beef, but subsequently became popular in the UK, where it was given its new name.
