Etymology: apparently a diminutive of earlier timbre n.¹ in same sense: see -el suffix². So far as appears, it was an English formation; but Spanish has a somewhat parallel diminutive form in tamboril tabor, tabret, < tambor drum (compare French tambourin ). More's spelling appears to be due to confusion with the earlier word tumbril n., which was also sometimes written timbrel.

Now chiefly biblical.
