单词 timbrel
释义

timbreln.1

/ˈtɪmbrəl/
Forms: Also 1500s tumbrel(le, timbril, timbrelle, tymbrel(le, Scottish timberall, 1500s–1600s tymbrell, timbrell, 1600s timbrill.
Etymology: apparently a diminutive of earlier timbre n.1 in same sense: see -el suffix2. So far as appears, it was an English formation; but Spanish has a somewhat parallel diminutive form in tamboril tabor, tabret, < tambor drum (compare French tambourin ). More's spelling appears to be due to confusion with the earlier word tumbril n., which was also sometimes written timbrel.
Now chiefly biblical.
a. A musical instrument of percussion; a tambourine or the like that could be held up in the hand.Chiefly used (to render Hebrew tōph) in versions of the Bible from Coverdale onward, or in allusions to the biblical use, and in reference to Asian instruments thought to be the same or similar. Cf. earlier timbre n.1
