Etymology: < Tigray (Tigrinya Təgray , Amharic Tigrāy ), the name of a region of northern Ethiopia. Compare Tigrinya n., which derives from the speakers' own name for their language ( < Tigrinya tigriññā).The region of Tigray originally comprised the area between the towns of Axum and Adwa. Over the centuries, it extended to the modern, much larger Tigray Regional State. The earliest reference to the people inhabiting this region is found in Byzantine Greek as Τιγρῆται , plural noun (10th cent.). In β. forms apparently mistakenly after Tigre n., which denotes a different language of the same language family, chiefly spoken in Eritrea.
