Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Tiktaalik.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Tiktaalik, genus name (E. B. Daeschler et al. 2006, in Nature 6 Apr. 759/2) < Western Canadian Inuit tiktaaliq burbot.The first finds of the fossil were made on Ellesmere Island in Nunavut, Canada, and the Western Canadian Inuit word was chosen as the genus name by local speakers of that language.
Palaeontology.
An extinct sarcopterygian fish of the late Devonian genus Tiktaalik, which is a transitional form between fish and tetrapods. Also: the genus itself.Tiktaalik fossils have arm-like skeletal structures, a neck and ribs similar to those of tetrapods, and a flattened skull.
