Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French timidité; Latin timiditās.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French timidité fear, apprehension (early 15th cent.; French timidité , in 17th cent. also ‘lack of assurance, confidence, or ease in dealings with others’), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin timiditās quality or condition of being timid < timidus timid adj. + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix). Compare later timid adj.
The quality or condition of being timid; lack of courage, confidence, or assertiveness.
