Etymology: apparently < timor-ous, timer-ous, with substitution of -some suffix for -ous; compare burthen-ous, burthen-some, quarrel-ous, quarrel-some, and especially humorous, humoursome (but humour was in common English use, which timor was not).
Now dialect.
