Etymology: < Italian tifoso fan, supporter (1929), figurative use of tifoso person suffering from typhus (1914), use as noun of tifoso suffering from typhus (1914) < tifo typhus n. + -oso -ose suffix1.In the plural form tifosi after the Italian plural form.
Chiefly Sport.
A fan or follower; (now) esp. an enthusiastic and committed supporter of a particular sport or team. Often in plural: such fans collectively.The term is commonly used in motor racing and football to refer to particularly partisan and vociferous fans of Italian teams, and in cycling to refer to fans of Italian cyclists and cycling teams.
