Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Tinguait.

Etymology: < German Tinguait (H. Rosenbusch Mikrosk. Physiogr. der massigen Gesteine (ed. 2, 1887) II. 628) < the name of the Serra do Tinguá , a massif in the Serra do Mar, near to Rio de Janeiro + German -it -ite suffix¹.

Geology.

A relatively coarse-grained pale to dark green igneous rock containing alkali feldspar, nepheline, and aegirine, and typically containing needle-like crystals; a variety or specimen of this rock.Tinguaite is the hypabyssal equivalent of phonolite.
