单词 tinktinkie
释义

tinktinkien.

Brit. /ˌtɪŋkˈtɪŋki/, U.S. /ˌtɪŋkˈtɪŋki/, South African English /ˌtɪŋkˈtɪŋki/
Forms: 1800s tinktinki, 1900s tintinkje, 1900s– tingtinkie, 1900s– tinktinkie, 1900s– tinktinky, 1900s– tintinkie.
Origin: A borrowing from Afrikaans. Etymon: Afrikaans tinktinkie.
Etymology: Apparently < Afrikaans tinktinkie (although this is first attested slightly later: 1880 or earlier), apparently < Dutch tinktink , denoting a tinking sound (compare tink int.) + Afrikaans -ie , diminutive suffix, so called with allusion to both the bird's call and its small size; compare Dutch †tinktinken to make a tinking sound (1782 in an apparently isolated attestation). Compare earlier pinc-pinc n.Compare the rare English form †tingtingatje (1924 in an apparently isolated attestation), which seems to reflect a slightly different formation in Afrikaans. Compare also Afrikaans †ting-ting (1884, reported in an English context), and the following slightly earlier example of a similar name for this bird in English:1868 S. Afr. Mag. July 446 A beautiful little Owl (Strix perlata)..; a Tom-tit (Parus cinerascens); an entirely new ‘Tinc-Tinc’ (Drymoica), and Bradornis mariquensis are the gems of the collection and all new to us. With the semantic motivation compare earlier tinkerbird n. at tinker n.1 Compounds 2 (denoting a different bird).
South African.
