Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin adīre , -ation suffix.
Etymology: Irregularly < classical Latin adīre to approach, to come into (an inheritance) (see adient adj.) + -ation suffix; compare classical Latin aditiō act of taking possession of an inheritance (see adition n.). Compare Dutch †aditie (rare) acceptance of an inheritance (1495 in late Middle Dutch as adicie ; < Latin) and Afrikaans adiasie (probably < English). Compare also Dutch aangaan , use as noun of aangaan to accept (an inheritance) (see adiate v.). Compare slightly later adiate v. Compare also earlier (in different sense) adition n.
