Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French bouterolle.
Etymology: < French bouterolle metal cover for the point of a sword, tip of a scabbard (1401 in Middle French; 1202 in Old French denoting a trim on the tip of an object) < boter , buter to push, to hit, to project (see butt v.1) + -olle , variant of -ole , diminutive suffix (see -ole suffix1).
Heraldry.
A charge in the form of a chape (chape n. 2); a crampet.
