Origin: Apparently an imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Apparently imitative of the sound of footsteps, tapping, etc. (compare tit n.3), with vowel variation in the second element. Compare earlier tick-tack n., tip-tap adj., and also tip-tap n.
Now rare.
