Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek Τιτανο-.
Etymology: < ancient Greek Τιτανο-, combining form (in e.g. Τιτανοκτόνος that slays Titans) of Τιτάν Titan n.1; compare -o- connective.Compare scientific Latin Titano- , typically used with reference to very large size (formations in which are found from the mid 19th cent.). Attested earliest in the first half of the 18th cent. in the French, Latin, and Greek loan Titanomachy n. A small number of formations within English are found from the first half of the 19th cent. (Titanolatry n., Titanolater n.). In addition occasional borrowings of scientific Latin formations are found in the second half of the 19th cent. (Titanotherium n., Titanosaurus n.). Combining with second elements ultimately of Greek origin.
Forming nouns denoting people, animals, etc., likened to or associated with the Titans of classical mythology (Titan n.1 2b) in some way. Also: forming nouns denoting events involving the Titans.
