单词 tittymal
释义

tittymaln.

Brit. /ˈtɪtɪm(ə)l/, U.S. /ˈtɪdim(ə)l/
Forms:

α. 1800s titmal.

β. 1800s tittimaw (English regional (Cheshire)), 1800s– tittymal (English regional (Devon)).

Origin: Probably from a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: tit n.4, proper name Mal.
Etymology: Probably < tit n.4 + the female forename Mal, pet form of Maud (see malkin n.), with (in β. forms) development of an epenthetic vowel (compare discussion of similar forms at titmouse n.).The form tittimaw shows vocalization of the final l (compare β. forms at malkin n.); influence of maw n.3 is unlikely.
English regional (chiefly south-western) (now rare).
A tit (a small songbird of the family Paridae); esp. the blue tit, Cyanistes caeruleus.
