Etymology: < scientific Latin Tityra, genus name ( L. J. P. Vieillot Analyse d'une nouvelle ornithologie élémentaire (1816) 39) < Byzantine Greek τίτυρος, τιτύρας a kind of bird (attested in a glossary), perhaps < the same base as ancient Greek τιτιγόνιον, an insect like a cicada.

Frequently with distinguishing word. Any of several passerine birds constituting the tropical American genus Tityra, typically having pale grey, white, and (in the male) black plumage, a large bill, and a grunting call. Also (in form Tityra): the genus itself.Tityras and their relatives are now placed in their own family, Tityridae.
