Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish botijo.
Etymology: < Spanish botijo (1589), alteration (with change of grammatical gender) of botija botija n.It is unclear whether the following quot. (a later version of which is reflected in quot. 1600) shows a slightly earlier instance of this word (and if so, whether the form buttesio may reflect an attempt to represent the pre-17th-cent. Spanish voiced fricative pronunciation /ʒ/ of the grapheme j, which is now pronounced /x/):1591 Hortop's Trauailes Eng. Man (rev. ed.) 12 We landed in an Iland.., there in a caue we found certain Buttesios of wine, which wee brought away with vs. Not fully naturalized in English.
Chiefly in Spanish and Latin American contexts.
An earthenware vessel with a relatively narrow base and a broad, closed, rounded body topped with a circular handle, and with a short open neck on one side (through which the vessel is filled), and a narrow spout (for pouring or drinking from) on the other, used for carrying, cooling, and serving water, wine, milk, etc. Cf. botija n.
