Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps a variant of bat n.2 (perhaps compare bat n.2 II.), although with sense 1 perhaps compare also French botte package, bundle (of soft material) (1316 in Middle French of straw or hay, 1352 of pieces of fabric, 1723 of flax). With use in sense 2 compare later bod n.2
1. Lacemaking. A circular cushion on which lace is woven. Cf. lace pillow n. at lace n. and adj. Compounds 2, pillow n. 5b. Obsolete.
