Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian bottega.
Etymology: < Italian bottega (a1571 in this sense; first half of the 12th cent. in sense ‘small shop or showroom’, mid 14th cent. in sense ‘workshop’) < classical Latin apothēca apothec n., with elision of the initial vowel. Compare bodega n., which has the same ulterior Latin etymon.In plural form botteghe after the Italian plural form.
An artist's workshop or studio, esp. in Italy during the Renaissance. Cf. atelier n.
