Etymology: < German Adiposis (1830 in the passage translated in quot. 1831) and its etymon scientific Latin adiposis (1828 or earlier) < classical Latin adip- , adeps adeps n. + scientific Latin -osis -osis suffix. Compare earlier adiposity n.
Medicine.
Originally: obesity of the body; fatty infiltration of an organ; (now rare). In later use also (usually with distinguishing English or scientific Latin word): any of various disorders affecting adipose tissue, esp. subcutaneous adipose tissue.
