Etymology: < French branle-r ‘to shake’; ulterior origin uncertain. Diez and Littré connect it with brandir to brandish v., the former taking it for a derivative form *brandoler , the latter < brandeler , found in Old French with the senses of both brandir and branler . Compare brandle v., brangle v.1
