Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin aditiōn-, aditiō.
Etymology: < classical Latin aditiōn-, aditiō act of approaching, right of approaching, (in legal context) act of taking possession of an inheritance (2nd cent. a.d.) < adit- , past participial stem of adīre to approach (see adient adj.) + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare French adition acceptance of a bequest, act of accepting an inheritance (both 16th cent. in Middle French; also in Old French in senses ‘coming, arrival’ (c1230 as addition ) and ‘ease of access’ (1316) in apparently isolated attestations). Compare earlier abition n. and exition n.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
