Nautical. to freshen (the) hawse: to let out or pull in slightly a cable passing through a hawsehole, so as to change the part exposed to stress or chafing; to renew the material used to prevent a cable from chafing. Also slang: (of a person) to have an alcoholic drink. Cf. to fresh the hawse, to freshen the nip. Obsolete.
