Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French bricoleur.
Etymology: < French bricoleur person who lives by his or her wits (1859; also 1778 denoting a type of hunting dog), person who can fix things ingeniously, jack of all trades (1938), person who appropriates and improvises with a diverse range of existing materials or sources to create a new artwork, theory, etc. ( C. Lévi-Strauss La Pensée Sauvage (1962) i. 26) < bricoler (see bricolage n.) + -eur -eur suffix. Compare earlier bricolage n.
1. Originally in French contexts: a person who performs a variety of manual jobs; someone who fixes things in an ingenious manner.
