单词 britchka
释义

britchkan.

Brit. /ˈbrɪtʃkə/, U.S. /ˈbrɪtʃkə/
Forms:

α. 1800s britska, 1800s– britzka Brit. /ˈbrɪtskə/, U.S. /ˈbrɪtskə/, 1800s– britzska.

β. 1800s britchska, 1800s britschka, 1800s britscka, 1800s– brichka, 1800s– britchka, 1800s– britzschka, 1900s– bryczka.

Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Russian. Or (ii) a borrowing from Polish. Etymons: Russian brička; Polish bryczka.
Etymology: < Russian brička (although this is apparently first attested later: 1830; also transliterated brichka , britchka ) or its etymon Polish bryczka, (regional) brycka (second half of the 17th cent.; cz represents //) < bryka carriage (although this is apparently first attested later: late 18th–early 19th cent.; probably < Italian biroccio , perhaps via German Birutsche : for both see barouche n.) + -ka , suffix forming diminutives. Compare French briska (1825 or earlier; 1806 or earlier as †britchka ; probably < Polish). Compare earlier barouche n., and see discussion at that entry.Quot. 1812 was written at a country mansion near Moscow. The α. forms perhaps reflect a regional variant of the Polish word with a development of // > /ts/, characteristic especially of the regions of Mazovia and Little Poland (the latter is centred on Cracow). With the forms britzschka, britschka compare German (now hist.) Britschka (1844 or earlier; < Polish). Compare:1839 Sat. Mag. Suppl. Aug. 86/1 The annexed cut represents a britzschka. This form was brought from Germany about a dozen years ago.
Now chiefly historical.
An open carriage with a folding hood and space for reclining.Chiefly found in English-language contexts in the mid 19th cent. (in the form britzska).
