A frequent Middle English and esp. Scottish variant of the grammatical inflection -es, -s, of the genitive singular, and the plural of nouns, and of the 3rd person singular of verbs. In manuscripts sometimes treated as a separate word or element, esp. in genitive singular, where probably it was often confounded with the possessive pronoun his (is).
